Alice's Photo Album Page 1


These photos appear on the first page of a black cardboard album labeled "Snap Shots." Alice clearly arranged the photos years after some were taken. The photo of the children below is dated 1920. The third one down is dated 1915.


The children in the photo above don't look like Bierbaums to me. They might have been neighbors. I'm not sure if Alice and her family were living in Newark at the time--just before and after World War I, or if they had moved to Maplewood. It's anybody's guess who the folks are in the photos below.



The photo below is labeled "Home, June 1921" but the young woman is definitely not Alice. It's such a puzzle, trying to imagine what Alice was thinking as she arranged and pasted these images into her book. Clearly they were meaningful to her, so much so that she didn't write more than cursory notes--because she would always remember. Now we can only guess at the faces and the places.

    Thank you very much for getting started on this. Grandma's mother in law was Annie Cornelia Hegel our great grandmother who was married to our great grandfather Freeman Elmer Smith. Kathy
