This portrait of Alice shows her the way I first remember her. It's a beautiful studio photo taken in the early 1960s--my best guess--and it is a family icon. When Alice took up painting in her later years, she painted two self-portraits based on this photo. In both, the dress was a bright blue, which Grandma explained was called "Alice blue." One copy hung among her gallery of paintings in her house in Fanwood, New Jersey, which I remember as a quiet place full of many treasures, including orange boxes full of toys.
Her painting is the source of the name for this blog. Though Alice is not wearing a gown, she does look like a movie star here. The lighting is perfect. Her face looks flawless and amazingly youthful, topped with coils of glossy hair. She was really lovely.
